We are making greater use of computers and electronics in our everyday life.  Sustained viewing of electronic screens means our eyes are working harder than ever.


Many people feel physical discomfort after two or more hours in front of a screen. These effects can be painful and, in the most extreme cases, debilitating. Symptoms vary but typical manifestations include:


  • dry eyes from reduced blinking
  • red, irritated eyes from staring at bright back-lighting
  • tired eyes from holding focus in a fixed location
  • blurred vision from screen glare
  • back, neck or shoulder pain from poor posture and screen position
  • headaches from repeated eye strain

Fortunately, the symptoms aren’t permanent, but can have lasting effect on those who rely heavily on electronics for education, work and social interaction. Computer Vision Syndrome (aka Digital Eye Strain) has surpassed carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis as the most common repetitive strain injury among workers.



  • Blink.
  • Take a break from the screen every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Wear task specific eyeglasses to aid your eyes in holding focus while in front of a screen.

  • Build an “eye-gonomic” workspace to mitigate environmental stresses.
  • Program your devices for optimal distance viewing.
  • Program your devices for light text on a dark background when viewing in a dark space.
